Trekking Through Sri Lankan Tea Plantation
& Picnic
From Ella, Haputale & Bandarawela
Tea is the most popular beverage, next to water, in the world, the story of tea begins in China. According to legend, in 2737 BC, the Chinese emperor Shen Nung was sitting beneath a tree while his servant boiled drinking water, when some leaves from the tree blew into the water.Whilst the custom of drinking tea dates back to the third millennium BC in China and was popularized in England during the 1660s by King Charles II and his wife the Portuguese Infanta Catherine de Braganza, it was not until the mid-19th century that the concept of ‘afternoon tea’ first appeared.Tea production is one of the main sources of foreign exchange for Sri Lanka and accounts for Employments directly or indirectly, over 1 million people, and in 1995 directly employed 215,338 on tea plantations and estates. Sri Lanka is the world’s fourth-largest producer of Tea. In 1995, it was the world’s leading exporter of Tea The humidity, cool temperatures, and rainfall of the country’s central highlands provide a climate that favors the production of high-quality tea. The industry was introduced to the country in 1867 by James Taylor, a British planter who arrived in 1852. The major tea growing areas are Kandy and NuwaraEliya in Central Province Badulla, Bandarawela and Haputale , Sri Lanka’s hill district is carpeted with beautiful terraced tea plantations. Perhaps the most famous is Lipton Tea original plantation near Haputale, which still grows and sells a variety of teas
Just drinking a few cups of tea and buying a couple of tea items on your visit to Sri Lanka, is really not the best way to get to know about this aspect of Ceylon. What you truly have to do to understand Sri Lankan Tea is to walk those estate paths and experience it for yourself. Once you are familiar with the tea trees first hand, you can visit one of the tea Factory that provide tours about tea and how it’s processed from green leaves to a block cup of Tea Sri Lanka is currently the fourth largest tea producer in the world. However, the history of tea in this country isn’t marked by how much is produced, but by the influence it has had on the nation and the tea culture as a whole. Each one of us, at some point in our lives, has heard of, seen, or drank Ceylon tea. Sri Lanka was known as Ceylon during the British colonial era, thus so was their tea. A visit to sri lanka is not complete without visiting a tea plantation the tea trail is one of the best experience the clients can have about the tea plantation The tea trails is a walk about four to five hours it is walking in the most beautiful tea plantation with very nice landscape and panoramic view and a good experience for the High tea country and the panorama that Sri Lanka can offer also you will see the tea ladies plucking tea all day from 8 am to 4 pm rain or shine and also you will join the tea ladies to pluck some tea for an half an hour and you will visit one of the tea ladies house for a cup of Tea, and you will have a picnic in the tea plantation and you will meet only locals not a tourists |

Horton Plains National Park is a protected area in the central highlands of Sri Lanka and is covered by Montana grassland and cloud forest. This plateau at an altitude of 2,100–2,300 metres (6,900–7,500 ft) is rich in biodiversity and many species found here are endemic to the region. This region was designated a national park in 1988. It is also a popular tourist destination.
The Horton Plains are the headwaters of three major Sri Lankan rivers, the Mahaweli, Kelani, and Walawe. In Sinhala the plains are known as Maha Eliya Plains. Stone tools dating back to Balangoda culture have been found here. The plains’ vegetation is grasslands interspersed with montane forest, and includes many endemic woody plants. Large herds of Sri Lankan sambar deer feature as typical mammals, and the park is also an Important Bird Area with many species not only endemic to Sri Lanka but restricted to the Horton Plains. Forest dieback is one of the major threats to the park and some studies suggest that it is caused by a natural phenomenon. The sheer precipice of World’s End and Baker’s Falls are among the tourist attractions of the park.
Horton Plains is located on the southern plateau of the central highlands of Sri Lanka. The peaks of Kirigalpoththa (2,389 metres (7,838 ft)) and Thotupola Kanda (2,357 metres (7,733 ft)), the second and the third highest of Sri Lanka, are situated to the west and north respectively. The park’s elevation ranges from 2,100–2,300 metres (6,900–7,500 ft). The rocks found in the park belong to the Archaean age and belong to the high series of the Precambrian era and are made up of Khondalites, Charnockites and granitic gneisses. The soil type is of the red-yellow podsolic group and the surface layer is covered with decayed organic matter

Tea is the most popular beverage, next to water, in the world, the story of tea begins in China. According to legend, in 2737 BC, the Chinese emperor Shen Nung was sitting beneath a tree while his servant boiled drinking water, when some leaves from the tree blew into the water.
Whilst the custom of drinking tea dates back to the third millennium BC in China and was popularized in England during the 1660s by King Charles II and his wife the Portuguese Infanta Catherine de Braganza, it was not until the mid-19th century that the concept of ‘afternoon tea’ first appeared.
Tea production is one of the main sources of foreign exchange for Sri Lanka and accounts for Employments directly or indirectly, over 1 million people, and in 1995 directly employed 215,338 on tea plantations and estates. The major tea growing areas are Kandy and Nuwara Eliya in Central Province Badulla, Bandarawela and Haputale , Sri Lanka’s hill district is carpeted with beautiful terraced tea plantations.
Once you are familiar with the tea trees first hand, you can visit one of the tea Factory that provide tours about tea and how it’s processed from green leaves to a block cup of Tea
Sri Lanka is currently the fourth largest tea producer in the world. A Day Plucking Tea with the Tea Ladies
When you do the trekking one night you will stay in the Misty Mountain Lodge in tea plantation and Experience a day as a Real Tea Plucker in Sri Lanka! Would you like to know more in depth about tea leaf and to be able to distinguish which one has a better quality and which one isn’t? Then this is your chance to get to learn that and much more. Live a day together with the tea plucking ladies of the village
As the first step for the manufacturing of quality Ceylon tea, approximately 300,000 estate workers in Sri Lanka pluck millions of tea leaves by hand every day. This largely counts to maintaining the best quality tea in Sri Lanka compared to other countries where the tea is plucked by machines.
When the tea is plucked by hand, only the bud and the two leaves are plucked, which have the flavor and aroma. When the plucking is done by machines, most of the time a lot of coarse leaves and a few twigs too would be mixed, which add bulk but not flavor to the tea.
After plucking the tea is taken straight to the muster sheds to weigh in under first-rate supervision, and then the teas are brought to the factory where they are withered by means of large blowers.
In order to bring out the juice of the leaves, the leaves are cut and a fermentation process begins. Great precision is needed to keep the correct temperature, humidity and specially the fermentation times need to be controlled. Failing to follow these guidelines will make the flavor disappear. The tea leaves are fired to retain the flavor after the fermentation process is complete and would be dried to bring out the qualities.
